Eye Jewelry the New Trend in Body Modification

Created in 2002 this tattoo makeup procedure was developed by the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery as a new way to make a statement when it comes to wearing jewelry. With tattoos, earrings and other types of piercings as popular ways to decorate the body and face, these doctors decided the Jewel Eye look would be the next generation in body cosmetics.

Jewel Eye (or “JewelEye” in the Netherlands) is exactly how it sounds. The surgical technique involves placing a tiny jewel design (about 3.5 mm) underneath a transparent layer of the eye, known as the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the delicate membrane that covers the front of the eyeball and lines the inside of the eyelids.

The jewel designs come in a number of glittery shapes: four-leaf clover, musical note, star, and hearts are the most popular. There is even a way to customize your own shape upon request.

The Jewel Eye, which Netherlands doctors refer to as an “Cosmetic Extraocular Implant”, can be performed by any registered ophthalmologist at designation clinics in the Netherlands area. The entire process takes about 15 minutes and ranges in price from $600-$1,200. So far this trend has gained immense popularity in the Netherlands, with a long waiting list of patients. Doctors and patients alike have been so pleased with the results and lack of side effects that this practice is starting to spread to nearby areas. Of course some in the ophthalmology field are skeptical of this practice, but for now the demand for Jewel Eye continues. No one knows if this trend will hit America but many suspect it is just a matter of time before this innovative jewel design hits close to home.
